SAN FRANCISCO – Twitter announced on Sunday that it had banned the personal account of the far right Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene for multiple platform violations of COVID-19 disinformation political, the latest strike against the brand whose embrace of conspiracy theories has been called “Cancer” for the GOP and lead the House to kick it out of committees.
The Republican of Georgia’s account has been permanently suspended under the Twitter TWTR “strike” system,
launched in March, which uses artificial intelligence to identify publications on the coronavirus which are deceptive enough to cause harm to people. Two or three warnings generate a 12 hour account lockout. Four strikes result in a one-week suspension. Five or more warnings can lead to the permanent deletion of a person from Twitter.
In a statement on the Telegram messaging app, Greene called Twitter’s move un-American. She wrote that her account was suspended after tweeting statistics from the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System, a government database that includes unverified raw data.
“Twitter is an enemy of America and cannot handle the truth,” Greene said. “That’s good, I’m going to show America that we don’t need them and that it’s time to defeat our enemies.”
Twitter previously suspended Greene’s personal account for periods ranging from 12 hours to a full week. The ban applies to Greene’s personal account, @mtgreenee, but does not affect his official Twitter account, @MTGRep.
The first term has repeatedly sparked controversy over inflammatory comments.
On social media, she expressed support for racist views, unfounded pro-Donald Trump QAnon conspiracy theories such as the lie that the 2020 election was stolen and calls for violence against democratic politicians, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.
Last February, Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell called his endorsement of conspiracy theories and “crazy lies” “cancer for the Republican Party.” That same month, the Democratic-led House fired her from its two committees, the House Education and Labor Committee as well as the House Budget Committee.
In July, Twitter suspended Greene for a week after President Joe Biden urged tech companies to take stronger action against claims of fake vaccines that “kill people.” Twitter has defended its efforts to keep dangerous disinformation about COVID-19 off its site, saying it has deleted thousands of tweets and challenged millions of accounts worldwide.
Among Greene’s latest tweets was a Saturday that falsely referred to “extremely high amounts of covid vaccine deaths,” she said. Telegram account, which appears to reflect his now banned Twitter feed in relation to Greene’s tweets stored in the Internet Archives.
Last week, Greene also boasted on Twitter that he spoke to the former president by phone. She said she had received permission from Trump to clarify his position that he is against vaccination warrants, although he encourages people to get vaccinated and to be vaccinated. Trump was booed by some members of the public in Dallas on December 19 when he said he received a COVID-19 recall.
On Sunday, White House senior medical adviser Dr Anthony Fauci said the United States had seen almost a “vertical increase” in new cases of COVID-19, now averaging 400,000 cases per day, with hospital admissions also on the rise. The omicron variant of COVID-19 has led to an increase in the number of new cases across the country.
